Packham pears, botanically known as Pyrus communis, are an Australian variety that, together with apricots and apples, belongs to the Rosaceae family. Also believed as the “Triumph of Packham”, the Packham pears are a cross between two English pears: a williams’ bon chrétien, also known as a bartlett in the US, and a uvedale st. germain pear. Packham pears have a long season and are prized for their sweet flavor and smooth texture.
Packham pears have different size, from medium to large one. They have irregular shape with a wide bulbous bottom tapering towards a small round neck with thin, dark brown stems. When ripe, the skin turns from green to pale yellow and is covered in patches of russeting, prominent lenticels, and small, smooth bumps, similar to a bartlett pear. The flesh is white to ivory, finely textured and moist, with some black-brown seeds in the central core.
Packham pears are juicy and creamy when ripe, with a sweet, aromatic flavor.or crunchy when they are bright green.
